IHSAA Football Sectional 22 Preview

IHSAA Football Sectional 22 Preview

Late October football means only one thing for Indiana High School Football, playoff time. All teams throw their regular season out the window as the single-elimination tournament begins on October 22.

Sectional 22 is the sectional that Lebanon has been in for the last handful of years. The Tigers have made the sectional final that past two years, but have lost both years to a very good Roncalli program.

The teams in Sectional 22 are Bishop Chatard, Frankfort, Indianapolis Crispus Attucks, Lebanon, Beech Grove, Roncalli, and Western High Schools.

The first matchup this Friday is between Indianapolis Bishop Chatard and Frankfort.  Chatard comes into the matchup at 5-4 while the Hotdogs come in at 2-6.

Chatard is currently ranked number 18 in the state and has had a relatively strong year.  Their record can come across as a bit deceiving.  They play in one of the strongest conferences in the state with teams like Brebuf and Roncalli.

Frankfort on the other hand has struggled.  Their only two wins coming against Clinton Prairie and Clinton Central.  They will look to make things interesting this Friday against a tough Chatard team.

The second of four sectional matchup games is between Indianapolis Crispus Attucks and Indianapolis Shortridge.  Both teams have a combined five wins all season.

Crispus Attucks comes into the sectional matchup at 3-5.  Their first two wins came against Purdue Poly and Phalen Leadership Academy. The other, Shortridge.

As for Shortridge, their two wins came against Purdue Poly and the Crimson Knights.  In their regular season matchup with Attucks, they fell just short, losing 26-24.  If their regular season matchup is any indication of what the sectional matchup will be like, it should be a close one.

In the bottom half of the sectional, the first game is Lebanon hosting Beech Grove. Lebanon is coming into this first round matchup having won their previous six games, with an overall record of 6-3. Beech Grove comes into postseason play with a record of 3-6.

Lebanon started off playing three very tough games, all three of Lebanon’s first opponents are all ranked in the top 50 in the state rankings according to saggarin.com. As stated above, Lebanon got really hot as a collective and won six games in a row, along with two tough wins against conference opponents Tri-West and Western Boone.

Beech Grove was 3-6 during the regular season, with not many quality wins under their belt. Beech Grove finished sixth in the Indiana Crossroads Conference with only two conference wins. Beech Grove is currently ranked 150th in the state rankings.

Lebanon comes into this game with high expectations.  They feel like they have a good chance of winning this Friday.

“We’ve had a good week of practice and I think we are ready.” said senior Nick Finney.

The second matchup in the bottom half of sectional 22 is Western hosting Roncalli. Roncalli is the reigning 4A state champ, winning all games in the playoff by 35+ last year. It is safe to say that Roncalli is not just the favorite to win this game, but win the sectional as well.

“We know from experience how good that Roncalli program is right now.  They have a great team seemingly every year.” said senior Kobe Ottinger.

Western went 6-3 in the regular season, going undefeated in conference play. Western is a tough team to beat, they have given Lebanon tough contests the past two years in the playoff, and look to do the same to Roncalli.

“The past two sectionals have been crazy.” said senior Drew Terrill.  “Western has been a good team the past couple of years, but we managed to move on.  I think that they have a better chance against Roncalli than most people think.”
