Thatcher Wins Girls’ Swim & Dive Coach of the Year

At the Girl’s Sectional Swim meet February 3rd, Lebanon’s head swimming and diving coach Wade Thatcher was named Coach of the Year. Every year at Sectionals, all of the coaches vote one coach to receive the award that they think deserves it. This year, Thatcher was that coach.

Thatcher was once a Lebanon Tigershark. His passion for Swimming and Diving brought him back into the program after he moved back to Lebanon and began teaching in the fall of 2011.

“I always enjoyed my time as a swimmer, so I wanted to get back into the program to be involved because of my passion for swimming,” said Thatcher.

n, Thatcher first became assistant coach. He upheld this position for three years, until the position of head coach opened up. He decided to take on the challenge, and for the last four years, Thatcher has been leading the Lebanon Boys and Girls Tigersharks into the pool.

As assistant coach, Thatcher had three girls’ conference wins. After transitioning to head coach, Thatcher has coached his way to two more girls’ conference wins, one being this year. Last year, the girls placed 5th at Sectionals, which improved by three places as a 2nd place finish was achieved this year. Thatcher believes that this is one of the reasons that he was named Coach of the Year.

“It was an honor to receive the coach of the year award because we are in a sectional with many strong teams and coaches. I really think I got the award because we went from a 5th place finish at sectionals to a 2nd place finish in only a year; that’s what made other coaches vote for me,” said Thatcher.

Thatcher’s honor to receive the award is paired with a general enjoyment of coaching the sport. He believes that the time he puts into the program is worth it, especially when he is able to see his team succeed.

“My favorite part about coaching is seeing the swimmers’ excitement, especially when they have successes and win,” said Thatcher.

This enjoyment of coaching stemmed from his time as a swimmer at Lebanon High School. When he was a Tigershark, his favorite event was the 500 freestyle. Now, as a coach, he is able to witness his team members enjoy the same events that he did in his time at LHS.

Congratulations to Wade Thatcher, Girls’ and Boys’ Swim and Dive head coach, for being named Coach of the Year!
