Although the New Orleans Pelicans could lose their star center, Anthony Davis, this offseason, the franchise will likely gain college phenom, Zion Williamson, after winning the 2019 NBA draft lottery on Tuesday in Chicago.

According to CNN, the Pelicans entered the night with the tied-for-seventh-best odds of landing the number 1 pick sitting at a six percent chance to do so. Prior to lottery night, the odds were in the Cleveland Cavaliers, New York Knicks, and Phoenix Suns’ favors to land Zion Williamson at 14 %. Evidently, Lady Luck was leaning a different direction.

Many expect Davis to be out the door after he requested a trade prior to the February 7thtrade deadline this past season. For now, it seems as if the Pelicans will have a player around whom they can build for the long term in Zion Williamson.

A few months ago, things looked pretty dreary for the Pelicans. They were seemingly on the verge of losing their foundation and had little other option than building through the draft. Now, New Orleans has a proven front-office executive, David Griffin, building the roster and the face of the franchise, with Zion Williamson, even if it deals Davis before the start of the 2019-20 season.

Teams that are seeking out Anthony Davis, such as the Los Angeles Lakers and the New York Knicks, are going to have to get creative in order to receive the star center. No matter how you look at it, the Pelicans are in a win-win situation, possibly receiving multiple star players for Davis if his wish to be traded is still true.

The following list is in order for the first ten draft picks in the 2019-2020 NBA Draft:

  1. New Orleans Pelicans

  4. Los Angeles Lakers
  5. Cleveland Cavaliers
