As seasons change once again, Lebanon High School prepares for its 2020 spring sports season in various ways. The LHS Co-ed Track and Field team is already training for the upcoming season with Shelley West as their head coach.
The track and field team has scheduled workouts for anyone interested that is not already participating in a winter sport. These strength training workouts take place twice a week and consist of working out with a plan created by the strength training coach and running either on the treadmill or outside, depending on weather.
Coach West spoke highly about the strong competitors they are expecting for the boys team this upcoming season.
Senior John Morgan will be competing in high jump and long jump this year and plans to fill in on running events. Both Junior JC Reese and Sophomore Trevor Winkles were on the 4×100 relay and will be a huge help to the boy sprinters. Hunter Crew finished out really strong in discus, so Coach West feels as if he will pick up where he left off and start out even stronger for this season.
On the distance side, Zachary West had a strong cross country season in Coach West’s opinion, along with several of his teammates, Aiden Frost, Hunter Smith, Jared Carter, JD Hawks, Kyler Strange, Nick Toleos and Sriram Srinivason. They will all fill in the distance holes for points that the team struggled with last year.
The girls team broke seven records last year and Coach West is expecting to have all but a few of those ladies back this year from the relay teams.
For the throwers, Junior Ashlyn Terrill returns after a great sophomore season, breaking the discus record qualifying for Regionals for shot put & discus. In jumps, Sophomore Christina Lamb and Senior Emma Huse for High Jump and Junior Ivy Strahm for Long Jump.
As for sprinters, Junior Hallie Montgomery will be out to break her 200 record, and go for the 100 and rebuild the 4×100 State team from last year. Junior Summer Stogsdill was on both record breaking 4×100 and 4×800 teams and will be strong in both of those events along with her other events. Sophomore Murphy Adams returns after breaking all distance records from last year and looks to do it again this season, along with teammates Abbi Coyle, Emerson Haines, Jessica Fischer and Lizzie Kincaid.
Along with all these names mentioned, the track and field team will still have several more outstanding athletes that will step up and help this team be great.
“My goals for this boys and girls team is to have a successful season, keep everyone healthy, be a big family, we always want to be Conference Champs and push everyone to be the best student athlete and teammate,”said Coach West.
Senior Emma Huse has the goal to stay positive throughout the entire season because she believes everyone is going to have a bad night and does not want that to tear her down. This year, as a leader, Huse plans to do everything she is asked to do and be seen as more of a friend to her teammates rather than a boss. Being a boss to her teammates would only cause negativity and will tear the team apart.
“I think that track season will go pretty well for us, we lost only a few seniors so I feel like even though we will miss them, we can maintain our strength and pull out another conference win for the third year in a row,”said Huse.
Senior John Morgan expects and hopes for the team to win conference. He believes the team will be receiving a lot of talent again this year which will be really good for them. Morgan’s goal is to make it to state for both long jump and high jump.
“I am going to be a good leader this year and make sure everyone is on the same page and locked in for the end year goal, which is to win conference,” said Morgan.
As a reminder, the track and field workouts are open to all students who do not participate in a winter sport and are interested in joining the team this upcoming season.
