The track and field team has always been one of the most participated sports at LHS. Many students go out for the team in hopes their speed, strength, and hops can lead them to victories. This year the team is larger than ever with over 130 student athletes competing.
The coaches have had to adjust to such a large team this year. They made an early change in the coaching staff by adding new throwing coach Mr. Zach Wagner at the start of the season. Since then, the coaches have done their best to maintain such a large group of athletes. The rise in number of students participating is likely credited to the large freshman class this year.
Many people have doubted the team and wondered if they’d be any good this year with too many athletes to keep track of. They attempted to silence those doubters in the first meet on March 12th. The meet was a dual meet against Hamilton Heights. The boys team came out on top with 89 points to Hamilton Heights 43, while the girls finished in second with 48 points behind Hamilton Heights 84.
Although it was a slow start for the girls, senior Ciarra Hiatt was the opposite as she came out and set the new pole vault school record in just the first meet of the season. Hiatt jumped 9’6” which puts her 6 inches over the previous record.
