In a sorrowful reminder that around 3:15 a.m. a truck was driven into a crowd at Bourbon and Canal street in New Orleans on New Year’s Day. There were a total of 14 people dead and 35 were injured due to this confirmed terrorist attack taking place only hours before a college quarterfinal game in the Caesars Superdome. This act was not inflicted accidentally, the identity of the suspect was Shamsud-Din Jabbar, at that time forty-two years old and a native to Texas. He was an Army veteran who professed relation with ISIS, as it was found of his possession of the said flag.
Before the occurrence of the New Orleans attack, it is known that he was presumed to have set fire at an Airbnb to conceal evidence of the attack; multiple other crimes were committed that related to this attack. Jabber was killed not long after the exchange as he would be involved with firing back at police. Many condolences towards lives lost and investigations are still occuring do to this terrorist attack that placed only hours into 2025. “Terrism is not gone and it never will be gone. The thing that I think that is important to take from this situation is be careful what happens to the politics around it. Do not fall for the politicization of these topics, terrism can be conducted by anyone at any time,” stated Joshua Debard, LHS teacher.
Despite the unfavorable acts that have been committed it is best to understand what goes on behind the news reports, and discover what is authentic to the story. This is a devastating moment in time, and it is best to be supportive of those family, friends, and others who may have lost someone that day.
