A tropical storm that later intensified to what is now known as Hurricane Melissa made landfall in Jamaica on Tuesday, October 28, 2025. The natural disaster will continue to pass through Cuba and will also hit several small Caribbean Islands.
A hurricane is defined as a severe tropical storm with violent winds. This hurricane is being classified as a category 5, recording wind speeds of up to 185 miles per hour. This wind speed is tied with two other hurricanes for the strongest landfall recorded in the Atlantic. To sum this information up, Melissa is one of the worst hurricanes that the Jamaica has ever seen. The aftermath of storms this intense can include loss of shelter, power, communication, transportation, and nutrition. It is important to remember that these islands are relatively small while having large populations. Because of this, many Jamaicans live in less desirable conditions, making it difficult to adapt to these unforgiving circumstances.
This hurricane destroyed what most of them have known as home all their life. There is only so much that students and staff here at Lebanon can do to help, but we ask that you please keep those affected by Hurricane Melissa in your thoughts and prayers as begin to reconstruct everything that has been destroyed.
