As the 2020 College Football season is just starting to unfold, there are many uncertainties with many programs. These things could be that one or more of their players have opted out of playing this fall, or the entire team is deciding to not play, or the entire conference deciding to not play. With these things in mind, let’s take a look at potential College Football Playoff contenders as they stand in the pre-season rankings.

The defending National Champions, the LSU Tigers lost a very high number of key starters from the team last season. Including their Heisman winning Quarterback Joe Burrow. Burrow set the SEC (Southeastern Conference) record for most touchdown passes in a single season with 60. Burrow is now known for having arguably the best single season performance in College Football History. Sadly, for LSU fans, Joe Burrow was a senior last season. Meaning he is no longer at the helm for the LSU Tigers. He was selected 1st Overall in the 2020 NFL draft. With Burrow leaving, the team is still ranked 4th in the preseason rankings according to NCAA.com.

Coming in as the 3rd ranked pre-season team according to NCAA.com is the Alabama Crimson Tide. “Bama” is in a very similar situation as LSU, their star Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was drafted in the early first round of the 2020 NFL draft as well. Alabama typically ends up at the top of the SEC standings at the end of the season. Avid football fanatic and Junior Alex Juarez stated that “The team that wins the SEC will punch their ticket to the College Football Playoff, but don’t be surprised if the 2nd place team sneaks in as well.” Many other key players such as the crazy fast Wide Revievers Henry Ruggs III and Jerry Judy were also selected in the 1st round of the 2020 NFL draft. Alabama is a program that perennially brings in great young talent from the High School level, could they fill in the very important spots this next season?

The team that is ranked 2nd in the preseason top 25 is the Ohio State Buckeyes. This of course is depending on if the Big 10 decides to play this season. The Buckeyes are led by their young but talented QB Justin Fields. Fields, originally committed to Georgia, but didn’t earn the starting role at UGA. He transferred to Ohio State and was granted immediate eligibility and played amazing. With the help of his powerful running back J.K. Dobbins, Fields led the Buckeyes to a 13-1 record. Including a Rose Bowl Win, one of the most coveted Bowl Games any team can make.

Coming in as the preseason “National Champions,” according to NCAA.com is the Clemson Tigers. The Tigers are also led by their star QB Trevor Lawrence. Lawrence is known for his arm and the accuracy he possesses in the short and intermediate game. The preseason Heisman favorite led the Tigers to the National Championship game against the LSU tigers, Lawrence did not have one of his better displays against a tough defense that LSU had all season. Will Lawrence be able to replicate his 2019 success in 2020?
