In recent news, a shooting occurred in Whitestown on November 5, 2025. Maria Florinda Rios Perez de Velazquez and her husband, Mauricio Velazquez, were assigned to a house cleaning job from their employer. The couple believing they were at the right place approached the door attempting to unlock the front door. The alleged shooter, Curt Anderson, fired through the front door fatally shooting Maria Perez. Maria Perez was pronounced dead at the scene of the crime. Around the same time, Anderson told dispatchers that two people were trying to break in as the reason for him firing his weapon.
In Boone County, a rally occurred demanding justice for Maria Perez outside the Boone County Prosecutor’s Office as the prosecutor met with her family.
During the rally, Perez’s husband spoke through a translator according to WRTV saying, “Even though we are immigrants, we are still people. We are not animals, we are still human, and we deserve this justice to be delivered,”

After investigation of the scene and the crime, police and prosecutors maintained confidentiality of the parties involved until the charges were official. Curt Anderson was charged on November 17, 2025 with voluntary manslaughter.
