Weightlifting in our APC (Advanced Physical Conditioning) classes have truly been on the come up. Each semester, more and more students have been signing up and buying into the process. Whether they are in-season athletes or training in the offseason, the commitment in the weight room continues to grow. The culture has shifted, lifting is no longer just part of training anymore; it has become a standard.
Their hard work and effort were on full display during max-out week from the 9th to the 13th. Athletes tested their progress in their core lifts, feeding off the energy in the room and pushing each other to hit new personal records. With more participation than ever, the intensity and support throughout the week showed how far the program has come.
One of the biggest highlights came from junior Avery Akin, who set a new back squat personal record of 465 pounds. Avery has been consistent in his work and continues to lead by example in the weight room. “I’m really proud of the hard work I’ve put in,” Akin said. “It feels good to see the results after staying consistent and pushing myself every day.”
As the program continues to grow, more athletes are finding ways to put their names on the APC banner clubs — the 700, 800, and 900-pound clubs — recognizing the combined total of their major lifts. Seeing more names added to the banners each year is proof that the standard is rising, and the work is paying off.
With max-out week behind us and momentum building, athletes are now looking ahead to the second annual Liftathon coming up this spring. More information will be posted soon. One thing is certain — APC weightlifting is growing, and our athletes are continuing to raise the bar.
